What is a Pterygium?

A pterygium is a non-cancerous, fleshy growth that starts on the white part of the eye (sclera) and can spread to the cornea. If left untreated, it can distort vision, cause chronic redness, and lead to permanent scarring.

Beyond Simple Removal

At Revive Nursing Home, we don't just "cut away" the growth. Simple excision often leads to the pterygium growing back. Our surgeons prefer Conjunctival Autograftingβ€”taking a small piece of healthy tissue from under the eyelid to cover the surgical site.

This biological barrier significantly reduces the chance of the growth returning and promotes a smoother, more aesthetic healing process.

  • Expert excision under surgical microscope
  • Conjunctival Autografting for long-term results
  • Effective relief from itching, burning, and redness
  • Restoration of the smooth corneal surface
  • Quick recovery with day-care surgical protocols
  • Comprehensive post-operative follow-up care

Pterygium FAQ

Is surgery always necessary for a pterygium? βŒ„
Not always. If the growth is small and not causing irritation or vision issues, we may monitor it and use lubricating drops. However, if it grows toward the center of the eye or causes persistent discomfort, surgery is the only way to remove it.
How long is the recovery period? βŒ„
Most patients can return to work within a few days. The eye will remain red for 2–3 weeks as it heals. You will need to avoid dusty environments and swimming for about a month.
What are the chances of the growth coming back? βŒ„
With older "bare sclera" techniques, recurrence was high (up to 50%). At Revive, we use Conjunctival Autografting, which brings the recurrence rate down significantly (usually below 5-10%).
