Ocular Enucleation
& Rehabilitation
A compassionate and specialized approach to eye removal surgery, focused on treating underlying disease and restoring facial appearance through advanced prosthetic integration.
What is Enucleation?
Enucleation is the surgical removal of the entire eyeball, leaving the eye muscles and the remaining orbital contents (like fat and connective tissue) intact. It is typically performed to treat intraocular tumors, manage severe trauma, or alleviate unbearable pain in a blind eye.
Life-Saving & Restorative Care
At Revive Nursing Home, we understand that enucleation is a significant emotional and physical journey. Our oculoplastic surgeons focus on two goals: effectively treating the primary condition (such as cancer) and ensuring the best possible foundation for a realistic, moving prosthetic eye.
- โ Removal of intraocular malignancies (e.g., Melanoma)
- โ Management of end-stage ocular disease and pain
- โ Integrated orbital implants for natural volume restoration
Techniques for Better Outcomes
Orbital Implants
During surgery, a spherical implant is placed in the eye socket to replace lost volume. The eye muscles are often attached to this implant to allow for movement of the future prosthesis.
Prosthetic Matching
We work closely with ocularists to ensure that once healed, your custom-made prosthetic eye matches the color, shape, and movement of your natural eye.
Infection Control
For cases involving severe trauma or endophthalmitis, enucleation acts as a definitive measure to prevent the spread of infection to the brain or the other eye.
The Rehabilitation Path
Surgery
Performed under general anesthesia. An orbital implant is placed and a conformer (temporary shield) is inserted.
Healing
The socket heals for 6โ8 weeks. During this time, the conformer maintains the shape of the eyelids.
Prosthesis
Once fully healed, you are fitted with a custom artificial eye by an ocularist for a natural look.
