What is a Myomectomy?

A myomectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove uterine fibroids—noncancerous growths in the uterus. Unlike a hysterectomy, which removes the entire uterus, a myomectomy only removes the fibroids and reconstructs the uterine wall.

This procedure is the gold standard for women who experience heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, or pressure, but wish to maintain their childbearing potential or simply prefer to keep their uterus.

Protecting Your Future

Our senior gynaecologists specialize in meticulous uterine reconstruction, ensuring the integrity of the uterine muscle for future pregnancies and hormonal health.

Methods of Removal

Laparoscopic Myomectomy

Using "keyhole" incisions and specialized instruments, this minimally invasive approach is ideal for smaller or fewer fibroids, offering minimal scarring and a rapid 1-2 week recovery.

Abdominal (Open) Myomectomy

A traditional approach used for very large, numerous, or deeply embedded fibroids. This allows the surgeon direct access to safely remove complex growths and perform extensive uterine repair.

Hysteroscopic Myomectomy

For fibroids located inside the uterine cavity (submucosal), removal is performed through the vagina using a scope, requiring no external incisions and providing a near-immediate recovery.

Understanding Recovery

Can I get pregnant after a myomectomy?
Yes. In fact, many women undergo a myomectomy specifically to improve their chances of conception. Depending on the depth of the incisions in the uterine wall, your doctor may recommend a waiting period (usually 3–6 months) before trying to conceive to ensure the uterus is fully healed.
How long is the hospital stay?
Laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures often allow for same-day or next-day discharge. An open abdominal myomectomy typically requires 2–3 days of hospital observation to manage pain and monitor the healing process.
Will the fibroids grow back?
The fibroids removed during surgery will not return. However, new fibroids can potentially develop over time. Routine follow-ups and ultrasounds at our Baguiati clinic help monitor your long-term uterine health.
